On Saturday, October 2nd, at 7:00 p.m., two champions will undertake a sword-fighting challenge, as part of the special “Okal Rel” event, at the Vancouver Science Fiction Convention, or VCON.
The Okal Rel universe, designed by Lynda Williams, and described in her seven novels to date, (published by Edge Science Fiction), involves a far future where disputes of all kinds are settled by Sword Law. This prevents interstellar war, as well as clan blood feuds, although much in the galaxy can still go wrong.
As part of an Okal Rel event, a “small-sword” challenge will take place between two real swordsmen, of diverse backgrounds.
Devon Boorman has been studying European Swordplay for 17 years and in that time has won more than 40 Western Martial Arts competitions with the rapier, sidesword, and longsword. He is the Founder, Director, and Maestro d'Armi of Academie Duello, the world's largest school of Historical European Swordplay.
Craig Bowlsby has been fencing for 35 years, and was five times the Western Canadian Foil champion, as well as a member of the Canadian National Squad. He has also performed swordplay for television and screen. His novella, Horth in Killing Reach, is part of the Okal Rel Saga.
These duelists have chosen the small-sword, as a neutral weapon, allowing both cuts and thrusts. Both men have different styles, which will add to the exciting nature of the duel.
All media are invited to attend. A liaison person, familiar with fencing, will be attached to any reporter and film crew, upon request.
